PS3 Wireless Headphone Quick Review

On September 15, 2011, in Games, New Releases, PS3, by Rifle

So, i tossed my Trittons aside, cord and all, and set out on the liberating journey to wireless audio freedom.

To start, I have to say that I am a huge Tritton fan.  I’ve had three of their headsets and couldn’t be any happier with their performance. The audio quality is top of the line and the build is excellent.  But, they all had a long cord constantly being tripped over by dogs, toddlers, deer, bears and everything else that fucking roams the area.  lets just say it got in the way.  That nuisance has caused me to use the little bluetooth earbud headsets more and more often.  I lose the surround sound and that results in more in-game deaths.  Yeah, I blame my headset for my KDR.  lol. But wireless is nice…..i have to admit.

Build

The construction of the headset is unique and offers some great asthetics.  It looks great and the mechanics are easy and functional, as i would expect for any headset. Volume and the chat/sound ratio are all adjusted via slider on the front and back of the left headset. The power/mute button is a simple click of the top of the left headset, very easy and also give youa visual signal in the XMB status bar showing it toggle on/off. Ear cups fit nicely, it has nice ventilation so it doesn’t feel like a vacuum in there.  Outside noice is minimal and not at all disrupting.

The actual build quality, seems a bit cheap though.  Very light plastic makes it feel flimsy and breakable.  The mic can be retracted and extended but it feel as though normal wear and tear may take a toll on the mic system making loose down the road.

Only time will tell if the unit the actually holds up to the gamers abuse, but its weight is incredibly light compared others i have tried and puts little to no stress on your head.  Very comfortable to wear and no wire is the nicest feature this has, hands down.  No more getting the wire stuck on a chair, then standing up and getting your fuckin neck ripped in the opposite direction.  Wireless = Freedom.  Its true.

Performance

This is an all encompassing category, because this unit really has only one purpose; to give clear, crisp enjoyable audio for a gaming session or movie.  So, how does this thing to compared to a wired Tritton?  Not too bad actually.  The Tritton’s overall strength is it abundance of technology.  Most are Dolby certified and audio is unparalled.  But the Sony headset can hold its own too. The 7.1 surround is done very well.  The highs, mids and lows are easily heard without much distortion of noise.  At very loud intervals, you may notice some blending of the noises, but given that this is not TRUE surround, just simulated, you can come to expect that. Some headsets are plagued with a constant buzz or ringing at higher volumes. And the first thing i noticed was the audio without that buzz at a louder volume.  Really a strong point for me since i have experienced that in the past.

The physical range of the unit is what I have read to be around 40 ft.  I didn’t test at that distance, but I did try about 20 feet and in an adjoining kitchen with out any problem or lack of quality.

Another nice feature is that USB adapter doesn’t need direct line of sight to work.  I could get up mid-movie, go to the kitchen, fish out another beer and not lose any audio quality.  Super happy about that since it was a concern with it not being a bluetooth device.  Very very pleased.

This headset pairs with the PS3 automatically.  Plug the usb adapter in, hold down the powerbutton and away you go. No change in the settings, no nothin.  It just works.  And that is a real nice feature.  The only downside with is simple interace is its lack in XMB support.  There isn’t any.  But, some people could care less and all the controls are set on the headset anyway.

Conclusion

Overall, I am very happy with the unit.  I don’t feel the surround is up to par with a Dolby certified headset, but it aint to shabby being simulated and nothing to sneeze at.  The audio quality, wireless connection, and controls were the real strong points that I found.  The flimsy build was concerning and really the only con for the unit.

For the price of $99 it is hard to say that a lower end wired headset that might go for $150 is any better. You might see more audio functionality, but after experiencing the wireless, i won’t every go back to wired.  I would recommend this to anyone looking for a wireless solution for a headset.  You can’t beat the value that you get for the price, hands down.

Exciting ‘The Walking Dead’ News!

On September 9, 2011, in Videos, by Rifle

Per E! Online

Just when you thought it was safe to go—well, anywhere—the zombies are back.

The Walking Dead returns Sunday, Oct. 16, and—please don’t kill us—we just returned from a special screening of the season-two premiere.

It will blow your mind. And since our own brains are splattered across the screening room, that’s all we can say about the 90-minute episode. Sorry. However, The Walking Dead‘s producers gave us all manner of scoop on the coming season—and how series creator Frank Darabont‘s abrupt exit affected the show.

First of all, the 13-episode season (a virtual buffet of awesomeness after last year’s six-episode appetizer), is going to be split in two. Blame the NFL (but believe us, you’ll need the time to recover), because after airing seven episodes, the show will break to accommodate the holidays and football playoffs, and resume again in February with the final six.

“Season two is jam-packed,” said executive producer and Walking Dead comic-book creator Robert Kirkman. “It’s a much bigger season than the first season.” And new showrunner Glen Mazzara promises that “every episode will land with a punch.” (And did they hit hard in the premiere.)

Producers were reluctant to discuss the details surrounding the abrupt departure of original showrunner and series creator Frank Darabont (still credited as an executive producer), but his successor did say this: “I believe in Frank. He’s a talented guy— I loved working with him.” Mazzara wants to reassure fans worried about continuity: “We did a lot of work plotting this season with Frank,” he said. “I think we had such a  smooth transition is because it comes from a fully articulated world. There’s no plan to deviate…there’s no different vision of the show.”

“It wasn’t like a palace revolt,” EP Gale Anne Hurd said about Darabont’s exit. “Frank blessed Glenn as showrunner—and made it clear to the cast and crew that he had his blessing.”

Mazzara says he’s “very proud of the season”: “Whether we have zombie gags, action, emotional payoff where we’re pushing characters…we don’t have a bad episode in the can.”

EP David Alpert also said producers are paying attention to social media: “We have a very passionate and vocal fanbase,” he said. “We listen to what [our fans] have to say, and I think this season’s going to be very rewarding.”

“People are eager and excited” for the show to catch up with some of the comic book’s characters and storylines,  Alpert said, adding, “We’re going to give them twists and turns—but we’re not going to put it all out there. ”

“It’s not a bleak world, it’s an intense world,” Mazzara says about The Walking Dead. “We want you coming back because of the characters struggling against the odds. If you don’t have humor or heart it becomes a big gorefest.”

Not to say there isn’t plenty of gore this season. Do not, we repeat, do not planning on eating dinner (or even snacking) during the season premiere.

“Breaking Bad keeps setting new precedents,” Kirkman joked about AMC’s other critically acclaimed series known for its graphic violence.

We’ll see even more The Walking Dead‘s master of gore, special effects genius Greg Nicotero, will be showing off even more of his estimable talents this season: He’s directing episode 12, Hurd told us after the screening.

So despite Darabont’s exodus, we have to say The Walking Dead appears to be in very good hands. (Even if some of those hands are covered in blood and zombie guts.)

Are you about to lose your mind with excitement about the return of The Walking Dead? Scream it out in the comments!

—–Yeah, you saw that right!  E! News states the start of the show will being 10-16-11.  Everyone had thought to believe that it started on the appropriately timed, Halloween night.  Misstated or not, the article is one full of info for the zombie show lover.  Plus, 13 episodes?  Not 7? Holy shit is that great or what!!!!

Expendables 2 Casting…….

On September 6, 2011, in Movies, by Rifle

Ever since The Expendables made nearly $275 million at the international box office, fans have been curious as to how the 80s throwback action film would get even bigger for the sequel. It’s been established that much of the cast will be returning – including Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, and Randy Couture – but who will be joining them? Some big names have come up in conversation, but now it looks like two of them may be set.

IGN has discovered a page on the Millennium Films website that seems to suggest that Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris have officially joined the cast of The Expendables 2. CEO of NU Boyana studios David Varod recently confirmed in an interview that the two actors had signed on, but a third actor he mentioned, John Travolta, is not listed on the page. The studio site also says that Scott Adkins has joined the cast and that both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis will reprise their roles from the first film.

Set with an August 17, 2012 release date, the sequel will be helmed by Con Air director Simon West, with the script being written by Ken Kaufman (Space Cowboys and Curious George) and David Agosto. The plot revolves around the team of mercenaries swearing vengeance against the people responsible for killing Tool, the character played by Mickey Rourke in the first film.

There’s really no reason for either Norris or Van Damme not to be in The Expendables 2. Norris hasn’t actually done anything since 2005 and while JCVD does have a few small projects lined up, none of them could boost his career quite like a sequel to one of last year’s blockbusters. It’s hard to know if this is official word or just wishful thinking on the studios part, but as soon as we know, we’ll let you know.
